Chapter 12 Of Message Of A Master

Last Para:

Returning to the subject, the value of secretiveness lies in the fact that, being impersonal and universal, the “I” throws its power in with whatever words it is coupled, and when your plans are expressed in words verbally, they become realized and their force is spent. The Outer mind has found a way of escape and your purpose has lost its necessary momentum.

From this quote, what I understand is that one should not express what they want verbally especially sentences with the word 'I' , but whereas in Think & Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill states that one should read his Definite Major Purpose in Life/self confidence formula at least twice a day, making use of autosuggestion, and has 'I' in almost every step.

So who is right and who is wrong..? What is the best way to go about doing this?

I edit this question, because after a few hours of thinking I believe I have found right words to describe it. But won't re-post it here - just linking.

I love "The Message of A Master" but at the same time I find the wording a bit strange and some statements not very logical.

Since the Master is talking about "secretiveness", I have always understood his advice as: "Don't verbalize your desires in front of other people"...I know that's not what the text is saying literally but what it is saying doesn't make much sense. Are we supposed to keep a secret from ourselves? I don't think that's going to work. Also the statement of the Master is very easy to disprove. Think of something that you know you can do, then see if expressing it with words will prevent you from doing it. :)

So if we assume that the advice is to not talk with other people about your yet to manifest desires, then there is no contradiction. Napoleon Hill actually says the same thing in Think and Grow Rich. I don't have the exact quote now but he suggest we shouldn't talk about our ideas with anyone for two main reasons.
1. someone else could capitalize on your idea
2. most people are rather negative and pessimistic and will try to tell you all the reasons why you won't make it

I find the second reason especially important. Wayne Dyer also talks about this very often. He says that when you have to defend your position you move into the ego and that obstructs the manifestation process.

There is one exception to this "rule"(according to Think and Grow Rich) and that is your Master Mind group - a group of like minded people, who put their mind-power together to accomplish a common goal. In front of your master-mind group you can share your plans without hesitation, as they are there to support you, rather then question you.

Lastly, there is another seeming contradiction in regard to words. In "The Secret" for example they say that you should talk a lot about your desires and that will make them manifest faster. The thing is that "the secret" takes place in a slightly idealized world, where everyone is supportive and all people are part of your master-mind. However, this is not what most people experience day to day, so it's probably wiser to keep your mouth shut most of the time. :)

+1 Mostly agree with you, but I think the trick is to be confident enough in yourself and your abilities to dismiss the naysayers. Good ideas always seem to be accompanied by people who don't like them. That's how you know they're good ideas.

Once an idea starts to materialize in the world so that people can actually see it, you might of course meet with opposition and resistance. As you say the better the idea, the more resistance it tends to create, at least at first. But while the idea is still only in the mind, talking about it to the wrong people will only create resistance that is absolutely unnecessary and could have been avoided. So when you are ready to manifest your desire, you have to be prepared for resistance, but until then keep it and nurture it in your heart.

I have personally learned the hard way, multiple times, that it is not a good idea to talk about what you are trying to manifest. I can think of two times in particular, when I spoke about something that I thought had just manifested ("You'll never believe what just happened to me...this amazing opportunity just came through"), and in both cases, within twelve hours--Poof! Both opportunities fell through completely. (These were, by the way, things I tried to manifest through prayer and visualization; it was before I learned about the manifestation experiments on this site).

I have come across two passages from old books which offer possible explanation. I do not say they are right; they both come from authors who practiced traditions outside of New Thought / LOA.

From "Man's Eternal Quest" by Paramahansa Yogananda, 1939 (chapter on "Answered Prayer"):

"...God begins to answer. And when the infinite condescends to break his vow of silence, you will not be able to contain your joy. But if you have an egotistic desire to demonstrate to others the power of your prayers, or if you commercialize it you will lose that power. God will respond to you no more, you will have frightened him away...when you are impressed with yourself and want to show off, He sees that you seek not Him, but fame and glorification of your ego, and He will not come."

Another quote from "Black Elk Speaks," the amazing autobiography by the 19th century Sioux mystic, healer and medicine man:

"Of course it was not I who cured. It was the power from the outer world, and the visions and ceremonies had only made me like a hole through which the power could come to the two-leggeds. If I thought that I was doing it myself, the hole would close up and no power could come through. Then everything I could do would be foolish." (p. 157)

This is obviously a different take on the "secretiveness" theory...for my own part, I do find the explanation from "Message of a Master" very interesting.

These are both very good and very similar to what my pastor says. Jesus said very similar things that those whom say look what I did lose what they had. It is because that is the reward they seek, praise and they get it. It is not the thing that they seek but the praise. This is why you always say God is great, God did this not I. As Jesus said I can of my own self achieve nothing.

@Wade Casaldi - Great point! You just made me remember a few quotes from the New Testament:

After Jesus heals a leper: "And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man, but go thy way..." (Matt 8:4)

After healing two blind men: "And their eyes were opened, and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it." (Matt 9:30)

After resurrecting the dead Hebrew maiden: "And he charged them straitly that no man should know it..." (Mark 5:43)

wow. clearly you guys dont get it yet. i understood it as soon as i read it. i cant explain it to you, it is impossible. once you get it, you get it, and theres no real way to describe it. it does work, trust me. ive been attracting very positive awesome things to myself ever since i read this. weird coincidences and happenings, that all link to each other. and things are working out immensely well.

human mind is one. walk the one nutral path. you can only truly find the real meaning of this within your one self.

the answer to life... is 1.

go read up on some buddhism and eckhart tolle first, then come back to this after.

I see no contradiction here. This ties into what I have learned through my mystery schools. Do not go blabbing to others your goals. Here are reasons not to.

  1. You do not have the faith to do this and are seeking others to tell you yes this is good go for it.

  2. When you tell others there is a tendency to shoot you down consciously or unconsciously. "Are you sure about this, I hard of someone that lost everything in something like this."

  3. You are more worried about recognition for your idea than you are about your idea.

  4. Support doesn't last if you do get it so that better not be what you are counting on to motivate you.

  5. You are relying on others support to motivate you into action.

When we go to others to tell them before we even do anything it is like you are really more worried about what they think that what you think. You give control over your brain to another to decide. Imagine if while driving you had to take a poll on every turn to find out if you should turn that way, go the other way or straight, you would never get there and even may crash!

Ronald Regan had a plaque on his desk that said, "There are no limits to which a man may achieve as so long as he is willing to let someone else take the credit."

I think this is why Jesus said, "Do not let the left hand know what the right hand is doing."

When we seek attention that is our reward, but when we do the work that is our reward. It is in the second classification that gets things done and gains the rewards of satisfaction.

@Wade, Good points in regards to being secretive to others.

@CalonLan Thanks, yes we can get a lot of answers just by observation of what we had experienced.
