Here is an idea that is sure to create lots of Noise. (That is the idea anyway)

What if God & Devil are two extremes of the same phenomenon of creation energy?

Imagine if God could be the experience of the pure spiritual giving energy similar to a bright flash light shining towards you and the Devil is the exact opposite flow of the same energy experienced as the negative flow of the creation energy or in the analogy of the flashlight, the opposite flow of the light towards you which is experienced as darkness. Not the absence of light, but rather the taking away or opposite flow of the same light.

This ties in with the duality principle, where for every action a spontaneous opposite reaction is created to keep the original action in balance. Which is basically, for every good act a bad act is manifested into potential reality to keep it in balance. If this is so It could be the basis for the middle path in Buddhism.

What do you fellow spiritual seekers & friends think?

Insightful question

(26 Nov '09, 08:37) Stingray

Firstly, I should say that my (probably unpopular) viewpoint is that both God and Devil are abstract concepts that have been anthropomorphized by humans...just because that's what us humans tend to do when we don't really understand something :)

I think your excellent question has brought up something very important.

If there was no down, how would you know up?

If there was no darkness, then how would you know light?

The negative is a necessary pre-requisite to the positive existing.

And if we cut to the chase...God is meaningless without the Devil.

So rather than both being opposites, they are, in fact, partners, if not non-identical twins. Both being the same energy is a good way of saying the same thing.

I shall now run for cover :)

There was a God before there was a devil and God is not meanless without the devil. God created the devil but when he created him he created an beautiful angel that later choose to go against God and a war began in heaven. God create evil so that we would have something to choose from when he gave mankind free will to choose. I don't know why we try so hard to minimize God. That is alright everybody is entitle to their own beliefs that is all part of our free will to choose. The devil does not love you but God loves you very much. I would say earth is God's experimental station for man/woman.

I don't think we do try to minimize God. I think most of what we talk about on Inward Quest is nothing but God. But I think the issue you have is that the concept of God that often gets discussed is not your own personal concept of God. And so you seem to have the view that it is somehow "wrong" and so we need to keep being reminded of these biblical passages and stories. I have no problem with that. But I suspect that if you were to look more broadly at what is being said on this website, you would see much that would actually enhance your understanding of your own religious beliefs.

(27 Nov '09, 21:39) Stingray

Continuing on I just don't like it when we try to me deminize God like saying God would meanless without the devil. I understand the concept you are trying to say that if there was no evil than we would not know how to appreciate the good God is and what we have in our lives that are good. But you can be happy and having and enjoying good things in your life without having experience the evil. Going through the negativie can help you appreciate more of the postive when you recieve it but not neccesary. I do have an open and a broad look at many aspects of things. Stingray .

(03 Dec '09, 00:55) flowingwater

I do look at the the broader prospects from the site and at everyone's views and the data and information that is distributed among us is fantastic for it is like going to the library of Alexandria and everyone is reading books and having experiences and than sharing with the others that are there in the library with them and so we all get to share data, informations, and experiences. We sort them, accept or delete different data at this time on our journey of an spiritual quest of life and God. This is really great and I even agree to disgree. – flowingwater 7 mins ago

(03 Dec '09, 01:02) flowingwater

But I just don't want us to be little God that is all. Everyone is entitle to their own beliefs and many people have had many different experiences to influences their belief system. We are all continuing our journey which God allow us to have the free will to choose what to believe, or not believe in it is all totally up to us each as an individual. Have an nice day Stingray.

Hi Stingray. I just realized that I had not decided which answer best satisfied the energy that thrust the question into existence. Upon reading your answer today (Dec 27 2010) I am more convinced of the concept that the "answer" and the "question" are both the same energy and that only the manner in which it is grasped makes it a question or an answer (inspiration). When I read your answer today I realized that it was essentially my inspiration which I formulated as a question.

(27 Dec '10, 06:51) The Traveller

@Traveller - I agree with you. Question and Answer are the same energy viewed from different perspectives. That's why I believe there cannot be any question that doesn't have an answer, because the creation of the question implies the creation of the answer http://www.inwardquest.com/questions/4238/are-there-questions-that-cannot-be-answered

There is no Devil.....not in the way that most are lead to believe. There is only one energy... It is light (or good). Unless you are one of the people that walks into a room looking for the "dark switch" There is no darkness.....only the absent of light.

The universe exist with positive and negative energies, values, beliefs and so and so on, one of the laws of physics states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The buddhist and my self believe in duality, the mere existance of the universe would cease to exist without it. Therefore stingray is correct when he states that you can not have good without evil and you can not have a god without a devil, just as any good story has to have an antagonist and a protagonist or it is just a biography. And also they maybe one and the same, GOD and the devil maybe two sides of the same coin. However darkness is the absense of light particles/photons/waves so they are not even related. The hardest part is to define what is related and what is not. Without positive and negative energies you would not be seeing my words on the blank screen.

I would suggest that darkness is a relative lack of light - there are few (if any) absolutes in nature. Sunspots appear dark compared to the rest of the sun but they would still fry your sausages pretty quickly if you managed to embed one in your cooker

(27 Nov '09, 08:20) Stingray

God created evil and he also created the devil except when he created the devil was one of the most beautiful angels.

Now the reason God created evil was to give us humans an choice. He created us to be free moral agent with the ability to choose and if there was nothing for us to choose than there would be no choice.

I'm trying to fine the bible verse I haven't found it I will have to get back with you but it is in Psalms.

You are, what you do, when it counts. The Masao, knowledge is neither good nor bad, it depends on what you do with it.

(27 Nov '09, 07:57) Goodisevil

This question to me is kind of like saying existence and non-existence are two sides of the same coin. Believe me I have done this meditation and if you let it, it could drive you insane!

If existence needs non-existence to exist then it can't exist but if it does not exist then it is therefore non-existent and for non-existence to exist something has to exist so therefore it does exist.

For me I see God as supreme existence the everything, now the devil is see as the illusion and what leads people into the deeper depths of error and illusion until so lost and confused the person feels that he or she has lost connection with God. That of course is impossible but can be experienced through that getting lost in your negative beliefs or doubts fears and worries.

Now because the devil is the lie and the ultimate supreme illusion deceptive and leads people into deceptiveness, error and confusion that is a pretty "real" thing. We all deal with and fight with it, but by turning to the ultimate truth "God" it vanishes before us as we rebuke it to flee from us as the empty nothingness it really is.

you have positive and negative energy in you that is not the problem the problem is how you use it in your works to do good or bad! every thing is dual and in a whole! always seek balence and harmony in your work! the whole is the middle path!

No, God's energy, and the Devil's energy are not the same energy!

Before there was anything in this universe, God created the heavens, and the earth, there was no Devil at this time, until God choose to create his angels, and still there was no evil at this time, until God choose to create man, and woman after creating everything good, and perfect for man to enjoy!

Indeed God was please with his work of Art Creating the Universe, and Man, and Woman. So he choose to be even more generous by giving man, and woman the gift of choice, and freewill, and by doing this one of his Archangel became jealous of God, and wanted to be like God. This was the seed of negative thoughts, good verses evil!

The Devil saw that the woman was an innocent victim for him to pry on, and to gain the power that he seeks as a God, so he seduced her ignorance causing her to sin against the God who created her. So, it was Devil that created the dark energy in the Kingdom of God, therefore, he was cursed and thrown out of the kingdom of God forever!

God indeed was aware of the Devil’s negative thoughts and intention to destroy his Kingdom in Heaven and his creation on earth, man, and woman: but since he had given the man and the woman the most precious gift of all, the freedom to choose for themselves, he wanted to test their spiritual ability on trust and judgment; and the man and the woman in turn used their precious spiritual gifts of knowledge, and wisdom, unwisely, and by doing so, the Devil triumph obtaining God like powers over the humans that God created in his own image, and likeness. This evil deed by the Devil, the man, and the woman caused God to banish them out of the Garden of Eden forever!

So, although the light energy started out being one and the same energy of God, the Devil saw an opportunity to created from the light energy a darkness that is very different to the pure light energy, and the light change to the darkness, reflecting both light and darkness, separately; so positive, and negative are different in both perspective, and cannot be concluded as the same energy!

Using the concept of yin and yang depicted by the symbol of a circle divided into black and white, these seemingly contrary forces and polar opposites would be interconnected and thus only exist in relation to one another ... the circle would represent the primal creative energy from which these two forces would come into existence ...

happy hunting :)

Well, what i think here is there is a plane separate from the distinction of good and evil, termed as God and Devil by you. The supreme is beyond good and evil and the other way of saying is that good and evil reside in the Supreme. So the so called path of balance is also seen as something beyond good and evil. The world i am talking about is not a digital world (meaning not only '0' and '1') but more. It is not either black or white (bad or good), but grey or neither black nor white. I am not sure how to explain this, but one needs to come out of thinking in terms of judgements or definitions like God and Devil or good and bad. The truth is beyond this and once you get to realize this it is very difficult to describe in words. So giving becomes taking, good becomes bad and bad becomes good.. friend becomes enemy and enemy becomes a friend.. such is the world a little bit difficult to understand with the limitations of senses. Thinking with the senses is like playing a game with the rules and limitations set by us but it is fun thinking in terms of good, bad, love, hate, winning, loosing etc. Well, I am not sure how other players are going to react to this.. but I really cannot stay for long with the illusion!! I quit sometimes.. and i remind myself that I am free and infinite being..

actaully the world is black and white it is either right or wrong, true or false, yes or no, you only make it grey to alleviate yourself of any real decision, Mr Miagi say, "Walk on right side of road, Walk on left side of road, no walk in middle get squashed.

Someone once said you can not serve two masters you will serve one and hate the other. You can not straddle the fence you will either be on one side or the other. You must choose with your free will or else you will have choosen by default of not choosing still you have choosen without realizing it.

(27 Nov '09, 09:26) flowingwater

agreed with both of you.. this is what logic makes us understand.. the rules of the game that we have chosen to play.. the discussion is always logical.. so your answer relates correctly here..

Some think of a Satan/Michael type concept with Christ at the top and Beelzebub at the bottom. These two aspects claim (or wish to deny, respectively) that they do not know what the other is doing...

concept of devil is incorrect. its a chidish device to frighten the ignorant into behaving properly. satan acts on the direct orders of god as a tester- as evidenced in the life of job, for example or more precisely when jesus went into the desert after his baptism by john- the fact that we feel the tests to be too ''harsh ''or ''not fair''is our own lack of spiritual developement

Hello everyone there are wise words here and questions still to be answered. I have always believed God to be omnipotent all powerful and omnipresent everywhere in so being i question why our father in heaven chose to let evil happen at all and why if being omnipotent did and does allow evil to exist at all whether the devil is real or not is irrelevant if God has the power right now to stop all wrong doing on earth now and forever! The real question is where does evil came from the devil? theserpent lucifer Satan man or woman? well i have struggled with these questions for more time than i would like remember and the serpent in the garden of Eden was lucifer was and is female! and all evil began throng the one spiritual being in this this these trying to overthrow God!! Adam never even talked to the serpent in the hardened Eden only eve did!! So ask world where all evil starts and finishes and you Will clearly see what our world and how and why we truly exist

God and Satan in the end are two distinct different beings but if the devil is evil then why does God allow him or her as it looks to be even exist! the devil being the opposite evil of good unless there is something more to them both that many if not most people who believe in both entities would refuse to believe because of there closed minds

(21 Dec '11, 10:27) Bruce

We are the evil in this world! If no one does wrong to others or nature at all then there is no devil! There is no evil!!! No one doEs anyone to do wrong these is no need in this world right now for any stealing killing cheating hunger or any other wrong! The wrong in this world is the Will and determination of those in the world to do these things which continues?

(21 Dec '11, 10:40) Bruce

I have often asked myself how anything imperfect and the potential to be evil can come from a perfect being (God)? I've come to believe from the myriad of religions all stating the idea of light and dark, ying and yang, shiva and shakti, etc that good and evil or liht and dark have to be encapsulated within the same creative force. The ideas of pantheism and panentheism are hard to get around even for Chrsitianity.

Colossians 1:15-20 New International Version (NIV)

The Supremacy of the Son of God 15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

This could go in a million directions for even more million years but here is my quickie version.

It's all opinion, and mine goes like this ...No, god and the devil are not the same energy. These are two words or labels used to convey the energies of good and evil. Good and Evil denote 2 opposite things 2 opposite things can not be the same.

Truth cant lie. Death cant live. Light cant be dark and dark cant be light. They are opposing energies.

A good tree can not bear bad fruit, a bad tree can not bear good fruit. A pine tree bears pine cones a, a pine apple tree bears pine apples.

The reason for the emphasis on the fruit is because the trees can look alike , not looking opposite at all. But good is good and evil is evil....no matter if the trees look alike...

In this case with God and the devil....You cant tell one from the other because they are both invisible...One exist and the other doesn't. One is spirit and the other is imagination.

God is taught as being both good and evil...It's a lie A house divided can not stand. Satan can not cast out Satan. Satan is just an enemy...anything opposing forward motion.

Satan is a liar, the father of lies, there is not truth in him....come on...it's a lie. The energy is a lie. It can't be true. Otherwise truth and love and caring for people is evil.

Evil is the product of mankind and the power of a freewill being with an imagination that is of of the same creative energy as it's source. Very powerful...Focus on fear, hatred, anger, destruction...That's what it creates.

Focus on Love Peace Giving and being good to people...It's easy, it gets easier with practice. The other road...One way street to self destruction...It's a choice and it's the only way to prove that we have free will.

We have to have the choice. The father...He's got this...Mom, she's got it too....We just need to tune in and listen to the invisible. We are the essence of our creators. Since we have free will and we are the essence of free will we have always been and always will be or we created our selves...take your pick.

Evil is a lie and lies are not true...they don't exist only in our imaginations.

Forward is the way but forward is not always straight

I'll be back...I like you guys. Cool site!
