I believe that if the body is unprepared (by right thoughts/words/deeds which can and do change the physical make up of our bodies) that sudden 'enlightnment' or 'cosmic consciousness' etc etc can damage both our physical bodies and our minds and even cause death. This is why in the Christian religions one is usually taught to fast and pray for lengthy periods when approaching the inner sanctum. "One cannot look on God and live" .. that sort of thing. On a more mundane level, rigid vessels (mentalities) are unable to accommodate new ideas. answered 04 Feb '10, 02:26 Inactive User ♦♦ |
Jesus was referring to the fact that He came to change the world, and the old ways. He did not seek to fit His ideas into the established way- the old Judaism. Instead, he sought to start the World afresh with His beliefs- thus, He used the analogy of the old wineskin holding fresh, new wine- the wine would be wrecked by the old yeast and germs. Instead, He referred to a new wineskin- Himself- where a new set of ideas was to be laid down for the world. Blessings, Jai answered 05 Feb '10, 17:06 Jaianniah |
Wineskins would stretch with new wine being put in as it continues to ferment, and then they would harden. If new wine was put into a hardened wineskin, the continued fermentation risked bursting the skin, and both the wineskin and the new wine would be lost. It has been suggested that the parable of new and old wineskins is about the nature of teaching and those who are taught. No one takes a lesson meant for a new student and tries to teach it to an old (already educated) student. If he does, he will fail to teach the new student, and the lesson meant for the new student will be rejected by the old student. answered 27 Jan '10, 19:57 Vesuvius |
i think this means that his message of the new covenent was lost on the older jews who rejected him-just as when the israelites had to wander in the desert with moses for 40 years-christ knew that he wasnt here to convert the old guard-he was to establish a new covenent with, not only the old skins-the jews -but with new skins-gentiles etc.i believe this saying to be a classic christ metaphor-after all-he was careful -not about what he said-but how he said it. answered 03 Feb '10, 03:22 eleanor sawitsky 1 |
I'm personally not 100% sure. Jesus did not go on to "explain" what he meant by the parable. The parable is used elsewhere in the bible but with differant contexts and situations. Considering Jesus did not go on to explain, I believe it would be wrong of me to "put words in Jesus mouth" about what he meant. answered 14 Feb '11, 17:46 Pastor D |
This is an old idiom, we would use a new idiom today saying something like "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." As Jesus was using this though, we must to accept and understand the teachings of Christ be re-born of the spirit, this new birth brings the Holy Spirit into us, it is through this Holy Spirit that we gain understanding and authority of Christ within us. In other words we make ourselves as to a new container that is a vessel for the Holy Spirit and Christ. This is through accepting Jesus Christ as our own personal savior we become born again as a new vessel fit to carry Christ and the Holy Spirit. Before this we only had the world spirit in us but to be fit to carry the Holy Spirit we needed to accept Christ. This acceptance is a new birth and makes us a new creation in Christ, the old dies at that moment and the new is born ready for the new treasure that could not fit in the old us. So to use today's idiom about teaching an old dog new tricks, this would be like turning the dog back into a puppy ready and raring to learn all the new tricks! answered 15 Feb '11, 05:39 Wade Casaldi Your answer is full of spiritual wisdom, thank you.

Wine-skin. wine contained in the skin flesh bag.Flesh bag being the containner, wine being belief that fills the container. old belief have some truth in them, but new truth have no belief in them it is simply the truth.Yet new truth can also become belief, but once this belief is stopping your growth it is like old wine. One should seek the truth always because there is always some new truth to find.If you stop your truth on the belief that you know how can you ever find what you do not know? One should stay in the beguinning seek the truth and believe in the truth. Also in the gospel of thomas. Nobody drinks aged wine and immediately wants to drink young wine. Young wine is not poured into old wineskins, or they might break, and aged wine is not poured into a new wineskin, or it might spoil. http://gnosis.org/naghamm/gosthom.html Someone trap in hold belief can't accept new truth he is drunk from belief, someone new can accept new truth.Wineskin being the flesh that contain the water. Wine being a alcool beverage would make someone drunk. drunk from old belief cannot accept the new truth, until they shake of their wine.if not they will break,if old belief are introduced in new wineskin he will not be able to look for the truth him self because he will be spoil by the old belief. Jesus said, "I am not your teacher. Because you have drunk, you have become intoxicated from the bubbling spring that I have tended." I have give you new truth but you are still spoiled and intoxicated from your old belief, the bubbling spring that i have tended made you drunk. And you believe i am your teacher. You have become intoxicated and drunk from the bubling spring of truth that i have tended. in this sentence from the gospel of thomas. Jesus said to his disciples, "Compare me to something and tell me what I am like." Simon Peter said to him, "You are like a just messenger." Matthew said to him, "You are like a wise philosopher." Thomas said to him, "Teacher, my mouth is utterly unable to say what you are like." Jesus said, "I am not your teacher. Because you have drunk, you have become intoxicated from the bubbling spring that I have tended." And he took him, and withdrew, and spoke three sayings to him. When Thomas came back to his friends they asked him, "What did Jesus say to you?" Thomas said to them, "If I tell you one of the sayings he spoke to me, you will pick up rocks and stone me, and fire will come from the rocks and devour you." http://gnosis.org/naghamm/gosthom.html this little child of seven days old just revealed this to you. So let there be light,Be the light that you can be,experience and enjoy. answered 27 Feb '13, 18:52 white tiger the few has to blaze the trail through the plagues. an old rigid ego can not properly assimilate the influx of divine energies.
these energies will be translated through belief systems, perceptual mechanisms, emotional habits and mental patterns in negative and sometimes traumatic manner.
renewal and quickening are usually experienced as cleansing and purging processess as what is happening now on a global scale.
