Dear Inward Questers,

During her youth, my fiancee had a few experiences where she fainted, and then found herself on a beach where she was visited by dead relatives before awakening.

I myself had a waking experience a few hours after my grandfather died, where the image or vision came to me, of him lying on the beach, and seeing his father (my great grandfather) standing over him extending his hand to help him up.

I am reminded of a quote from Lord of the Rings, written by J.R.R. Tolkien, which pertained to notions of death and the afterlife:

“And the ship went out into the High Sea and passed on into the West, until at last on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise.”

– J.R.R.Tolkien, Return of the King, “The Grey Havens”

Although I'm not sure about this particular quote, Tolkien was known to take much of his imagery from his dreams, such as the gigantic tidal wave that appeared in "The Simalrillio" wiping out the island nation of Numenor.

Please let me know if you have any insights.

Thanks again, and all best.

It's hard to fully interpret dreams / visions as they are all unique but here's what some of those symbols you mentioned might mean. I got this info from here. I have used this site myself before and it seems to be pretty accurate. I hope it helps:)

To see the beach in your dream symbolizes the meeting between your two states of mind. The sand is symbolic of the rational and mental processes while the water signifies the irrational, unsteady, and emotional aspects of yourself. It is a place of transition between the physical/material and the spiritual.

To dream that you are on the beach and looking out toward the ocean indicates unknown and major changes that are occurring in your life. Consider the state of the ocean, whether it is calm, pleasant, forbidding, etc.

To dream that you are looking toward the beach suggests that you are returning to what is familiar to you. Alternatively, you may be adapting or accepting to the changes and circumstances in your life.

To dream that you are relaxing on a beach signifies that the coming weeks will be calm and tranquil for you. Your stress will be alleviated and you will find peace of mind.

To see or talk to the dead in your dream forewarns that you are being influenced by negative people and are hanging around the wrong crowd. This dream may also be a way for you to resolve your feelings with those who have passed on. Alternatively, the dream symbolises material loss. If you dream of a person who has died a long time ago, then it suggests that a current situation or relationship in your life resembles the quality of that deceased person. The dream may depict how you need to let this situation or relationship die and end it.

To see and talk with your dead parents in your dreams represent your fears of losing them or your way of coping with the loss. You are using your dream as a last opportunity to say your final good-byes to them.

To see your dead sibling, relative, or friend in your dream indicates that you miss them and are trying to relive your old experiences you had with them. In trying to keep up with the pace of your daily waking life, your dreams may serve as your only outlet in coping and coming to terms with the loss of a loved one.
